3 Tips for Buying American for the Holidays

According to ABC News, the average American will spend an estimated $700 on holiday gifts and treats this year. If each of us spent just $64 out of that $700 on American made products, it would result in 200,000 new jobs here in the USA.

The mindset of "it's too expensive or too hard to buy American" needs to become a thing of the past! With technology readily available at our fingertips, buying American doesn't have to be a hassle. This holiday season, let's help others live the American dream by supporting local businesses and buying products made in the USA.

1.) Start small. Look for gift wrap, bows, ribbons, tags and tape made in the USA. Don't forget about candy and treats! Many candy canes and seasonal treats are made overseas, so look for ones that are made here in the USA. (My personal favorite are Peeps Marshmallows, which are made in Bethlehem, PA.).

2.) Don't forget about the decorations. I'll admit, I've saved myself a ton of money by choosing not to buy holiday decorations that are made overseas. While browsing the shelves at our local department stores, I realized that options for American made decorations are slim. Instead of hitting the mall or big box stores this year, try going to a craft fair or makers' market for your festive decor. There's something about supporting a local artist that gives you that warm, fuzzy feeling inside, especially around the holidays. (Not to mention it circulates your money back into the local economy.)

3.) Utilize your resources. Buying American is more than a just tag, it's a way of life. If you're struggling to find something on your list, or are just curious who is making their products here in the USA, check out our resource directory.

Happy holidays!
